The titular character of Eliot’s Silas Marner undergoes dramatic, yet passive changes throughout the course of the plot. When looked upon from this angle, it becomes clear why the spiritually and emotionally damaged Silas sought life here, rather than in a urban center like London. Describing Raveloe as “snug” and “nestled,” Eliot gives the town a comfortable feeling, making it feel as if it were a place of refuge. The collage artworks pulled from imagery within each of the stories and then combined textual and symbolic elements that Ted supplied. I had two colors for the interior, and for the cover, we were able to convince Subterranean to invest in a cool die cut dustjacket, that works with the cover stamping below. Ted has always had a good idea of what he wants, and this project was no different, making it a fun and challenging collaboration. The project evolved into me doing interior collages and the dust jacket as well.
