The prose is dense but lovely, Dickensian in both thoughtfulness and verbosity. “If love were an archer someone had put out its eyes, and it went stumbling about, blindly letting loose its arrows, never meeting its mark.”įirst off, I have to talk about Perry’s writing style. I was incredibly surprised by how much I ended up loving it. I’m so incredibly thankful that I did, because this novel was gorgeous. However, when Tom Hiddleston was cast as one of the leads in the television series, I knew I had to finally dust it off and read it. I bought it at a library sale because the cover is stunning, but it sounded more than a bit slow, and I’m not a huge reader of historical fiction. I didn’t expect to love The Essex Serpent. This is another of those books that’s been sitting on my shelf for years, but news of an upcoming adaption made me finally pick it up. ![]() ![]() What details does the author provide, right from the opening paragraphs of Shiloh, that make this clear to readers? Lorena and Eleanor fell in love shortly before FDR won the presidency. More riveting are Lorena’s memories of her early life before Eleanor, from a dirt-poor childhood to a brief circus career described in arrestingly colorful detail to work as a journalist forbidden to publish her suspicion that Lindbergh staged a coverup concerning his baby’s kidnapping. Now in late middle-age, the two fall into their ingrained routine as lovers-and has anyone written about middle-aged women’s bodies and sexuality with Bloom’s affectionate grace? Lorena’s enduring love for Eleanor does not blind her to the reality of the two women’s differences: “Her propriety, my brass knuckles.” Bloom mostly depicts already familiar details of Eleanor’s history, character, and personality.
